 Support for Summer Research at Occidental

The Occidental Summer Research Program is funded with College Funds and with endowments, grants, and gifts from many sources. We gratefully acknowledge support from the following:

Anderson Endowment
A gift from the estate of Totton J. and Frances M. Anderson provides support for summer research fellows in Politics and closely related fields.

Chemistry Alumni Endowment
Gifts from Chemistry Alumni provide support for summer research fellows in Chemistry and Biochemistry, including the Leiden exchange program in the Netherlands.

Ford Research Endowment
A gift from the Ford Foundation created an endowment to support undergraduate research in all disciplines.

Walter P. Gerken Endowment
A gift from the James Irvine foundation funds the Gerken Fellowship which supports a student from Politics, Diplomacy and World Affairs, or other disciplines who is researching a public policy issue of importance to Los Angeles or the United States.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Grant
A Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Grant supports summer research fellows in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Kinesiology, Cognitive Science and Psychobiology, and in areas of Mathematics, Physics and Geology linked to the life sciences.

Fletcher Jones Chemistry Research Endowment
A gift from the Fletcher Jones Foundation provides support for summer research fellows in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Norris Science Endowment
A gift from the Eileen P. and Kenneth T. Norris Foundation provides support for research in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics.

Richter Research Fellowships Grant
A grant from the Paul K. & Evalyn E. Cook Richter Trusts provides support for independent research projects with an international or intercultural aspect.  International Fellowships support students researching abroad for eight to ten weeks; Research Fellowships support students working on campus.

Stauffer Undergraduate Research in Chemistry and Biochemistry Endowment/Challenge Undergraduate Research in Chemistry and Biochemistry Endowment
A challenge grant from the John Stauffer Charitable Trust and associated matching funds provide support for summer research fellows in Biochemistry and Chemistry.

Robert W. Winter Summer Research in Art History and Architecture Endowment
A gift from Occidental Alumni funds this endowed Fellowship which provides support for a project in the history of art or architecture.

Science Scholars Awards
Endowments and grants from the Fletcher Jones Foundation, the Eileen P. and Kenneth T. Norris Foundation, and the Beckman Foundation support students over a 15 to 18 month period which includes Summer Research. 

The Beckman Scholars Award supports research in Biology, Biochemistry, and Chemistry.  The Norris Science Scholars Award supports research in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geology and Physics. 
The Fletcher Jones Science Scholars Award supports research in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental science, Geology, Neuroscience and Physics.

In addition, generous gifts from alumni and friends of the College and grants to individual faculty are used to support students during the Summer Research Program.

With the exception of the Science Scholars Awards, students do not apply directly for specific funding; decisions about which funding to offer each Summer Research student are made by the URC.
