On September 14th, 2000, Re-Envisioning the Los Angeles River hosted the culminating event in its yearlong series promoting community and ecological revitalization. The candidates for the next mayor of Los Angeles debated "Which Way for the L.A. River and L.A.'s Urban Environment." Over 400 people attended the debate in Keck Theater at Occidental College, and a much broader audience was reached via the live broadcast on KCRW's Which Way L.A., hosted by Warren Olney.

In addition to the debate itself, a questionnaire was distributed to the candidates. Due to the limited time frame of the debate, the questionnaire was designed to provide information on critical L.A. River and urban environment issues that were not covered at the debate. In cooperation with the co-sponsors of the debate, a working issues briefing paper has also been prepared. Replies to the questionnaire are available here.
