The Pollution Prevention Center (PPC)*, founded in 1990, is an interdisciplinary program of education, research and outreach, based at the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College in Los Angeles, whose mission is to reduce or eliminate the use of toxic substances, improve human and environmental health, and conserve resources. PPC has broad experience in pollution prevention research and policy work in a variety of industry sectors, including janitorial cleaning products, pulp and paper, electronics, food, and the garment care industry.
Among other accomplishments, PPC has become one of the leading experts on pollution prevention issues in the garment care industry. The garment care research and education program was launched in 1995, when PPC initiated the first comprehensive analysis of a pollution prevention technology. Central to the success of this program was the creation of real world demonstration sites throughout the LA Basin, which was a critical step in building the infrastructure necessary to sustain the commercialization of this technology.
