We're pleased to announce that Janette Sadik-Khan, New York City's Commissioner of Transportation, will be kicking off the 2010 LA StreetSummit with the Antoinette & Vincent M. Dungan Lecture on Energy & the Environment on Thursday March 18th, in the early evening, at Occidental College in Eagle Rock.
In New York City, Commissioner Sadik-Kahn has overseen an unprecedented transformation of streets. After generations of auto-centric transportation planning, New York City streets are being re-purposed to move and connect people over cars. Sadik-Khan has implemented numerous popular and innovative projects--from the pedestrianization of Times Square to the construction of over 200 miles of bike facilities in just 2 years--all of which are redefining streets as public places for people to utilize and inhabit in better ways. Her success has gained her world wide notoriety and she will be speaking at the 2010 StreetSummit to ellaborate on her efforts.
Here you can watch Janette give some background on how the streets transformation came about in NYC, primarily from the realization that the only way New York could continue to grow and thrive in the next 25 years was to minimize the city's environmental foot print.
