UEPI's annual Building Communities from the Ground Up celebration has been on hiatus since our fabulous 10 Year Anniversary in 2007.
In 2008, we awarded Oxy Seniors Karen Calderon and Marika Tsolakis with the Student Community Action Awards. At this time, UEPI does not have plans for a community awards ceremony in 2009, but the student award will be given at the UEP end of the semester barbecue in May 2009.
Karen Calderon majored in Diplomacy & World Affairs with an emphasis in Latin American politics. Her experience as the daugher of Guatemalan immigrants led to the filming of a documentary about the New Sanctuary Movement for her senior comprehensive project. After graduation, Karen plans to work for with the New Sanctuary Movement at CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic justice).
Marika Tsolakis was involved with issues of social justice and the environment both on and off campus during her time at Oxy. While serving as a member of the Board of Trustees Building and Grounds Committee Marika encourage the board to adopt LEED certification for new buildings. In the greater Los Angeles community, she left her mark interning at SAJE (Strategic Action for a Just Economy) and South Central Youth Empowered Thru Action, and tutoring for the Gear Up LA program at nearby Marshall High school.
