Data collected on board the R/Vs Vantuna, Yellowfin, or Sea World by the various MSE high schools is available for research and analysis by all participating schools. The Vantuna carries a SBE 25 Sealogger (Sea-bird Electronics, Inc.), a delicate instrument with probes for measuring various characteristics of the water, including temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Commonly called a "seabird", this instrument can accumulate large amounts of very accurate data without actually collecting a water sample. The instrument is slowly lowered through the water column to the bottom. Every half-second the probes record and store data, which is later downloaded into a computer. For information on the units of the Seabird data, click here. Available here are files of data collected for the Marine Science Experience, as well as a selection of data files collected by other programs. They are arranged by date and location of sampling. If you have Excel® software, you can open the Excel® version of each file as a spreadsheet. |
