Psychology Department

The Psychology Major at Oxy

Course Requirements

The field of psychology covers a broad range of topics that are studied from a diverse array of perspectives. After completing Introduction to Psychology (or scoring 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam in Psychology), students who declare the psychology major must complete nine additional courses: two departmental core courses, one course from each “Fundamentals” area, and three electives (either advanced seminars on special topics, research courses, or additional fundamentals courses).

The major is designed Swan Hall to provide sufficient exposure – breadth and depth – to a range of the basic subdisciplines comprising the field of Psychology and foster the analysis of intra- and inter-disciplinary themes. All majors receive basic training in research techniques, but many pursue more advanced training by conducting independent research projects (see PSYC 395 or 397). Finally, senior psychology majors must demonstrate writing proficiency with a portfolio of written work from past courses (submitted in the Fall semester) and knowledge by performing at a satisfactory level on the psychology comprehensive exam (taken in the Spring semester).

Regular courses offered by the department are listed below and in this downloadable PDF file: Psychology Course Requirements. Please refer to the Course Catalog for current offerings and full course descriptions.
