Each summer for more than 20 years, 24-30 High School students (completing their Junior year) are selected to take part in our 5 week program at Occidental College. Students are introduced to organisms (marine bacteria, plankton, algae, invertebrates, fish and mammals) as well as their interactions in Marine Ecology, Fisheries Biology, Aquaculture and Pollution Studies.

oc_boards.jpg (22596 bytes)Topics are covered through lectures, labs, field trips and cruises aboard the R/V Vantuna. This is an intensive college course and not a summer camp; there are reports, practicals, dissections, computer work and exams. The course runs from the end of June to the end of July and carries college credit (4 semester units) from Occidental College.

Students live in a college dorm along with 5 Oxy students that assist with the course work and arrange social activities. The program provides a strong introduction to marine biology, a taste of college life and a fun summer in the Los Angeles area.
