Masters Program in Marine Biology

In addition to the Bachelors degree, a select number of students are admitted to the Masters program. If you are interested in an advanced degree in Marine Biology at Occidental College, whether you've earned your undergraduate degree from Occidental or elsewhere, here are highlights of what you need to know:

  • Entrance exams: Prepare for the GRE General Test as well as the GRE Subject Test in Biology; scores from both exams are required for admission.
  • Program requirements: A minimum of 30 units must be taken and a thesis research project must be completed to earn a Masters degree.
  • Length of program: Students generally complete the coursework and thesis research in two years..
  • Recent projects: Research has been done on the effects of increasing salinity and sediments on embryo/larval fish of the Salton Sea, the sublethal effects of the oil dispersant Corexit 9527 upon a cultured marine copepod, and Isolation of bacteria from the ridgeback prawn, Sicyonia ingentis.
