Internship Opportunities for MLIS students

We offer several internships for MLIS students.  Below is a summary of positions currently available.

Cataloging

A cataloging internship will give experience in copy cataloging of all media.  Original cataloging may be added, depending on the expertise of the intern.  Cataloging internships require completion of both descriptive and subject cataloging classes.

Collection Development

Analyze specific collections and make suggestions for further development. May include analysis of the physical library space and building as well as grant writing.

Electronic Resources

  • Assist in the ongoing design and implementation of an intranet for library staff

Developing prototypes, usability testing, structural implementation, and assistance with content creation.

  • Assist with the implementation of an Electronic Resources Management system
    Potential tasks could include learning the features of a new system, developing local procedures and policies for Oxy's implementation, assisting with implementation details, reviewing licenses for key terms of use, developing and troubleshooting links for automatic collection of usage data, designing financial reports, and more.
  • Improve and develop the website's ability to share library news

Create online newsletter or news archive. May involve the use of Wikis, blogs, RSS feeds, and/or Content Management software.

  • Conduct usability studies of the current database listings

Evaluate and improve database access through the library website. Further develop and test the Research Launch pad as a gateway to databases.

Instruction

Contribute to library and research instruction sessions for Oxy's first-years, as well as many upper-division classes in a variety of academic disciplines.

Reference

Reference at Oxy includes telephone, e-mail, and desk reference, as well as the new OxyChatReference, an online Instant Messenger service.  Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to research consultations, as well as the growing collection of subject-based research guides online.

Special Collections

There are nearly 100,000 rare books, archival papers and manuscripts, visual media, paintings, prints and artifacts of unique significance in the arts, literature, theatre, book arts, and local, regional and cultural history in Oxy's Special Collections.  The following are a sample of possible projects:

  • Creating and researching exhibitions
  • Creating a Finding Aid for one of the 75 collections
  • Film Preservation: Care and storage of film, video, and audio
  • Cataloging Ephemera and Books
  • Digital Archive: Tasks include digitizing historical materials and describing born digital items
  • Grant Writing for more archival description and film preservation
