Occidental College's Alumnae/i Librarians

Below is a list of Occidental Alumnae/i who have become librarians.  If you are an alumni librarian and would like to be added to this page, please contact kieft@oxy.edu.

Christopher Bulock '07 gradated from UCLA's MLIS program in June 2009.  He was a Mellon Foundation summer intern in the summer of 2006. In the spring of 2009, Chris returned to Oxy as the Library's Electronic Resources Intern.

Brett VanBenschoten '06 is currently attending the SJSU MLIS program.  He worked as the Reference Assistant at the Occidental College Library, and is now the solo Library Associate at California Hospital Medical Center. Like Jennifer, Brett was a Mellon intern in the summer of 2005.

Jennifer Masunaga '06 also graduated from UCLA's MLIS program in 2008 and is currently a reference librarian with Occidental College Library.  She was also a Mellon intern and formerly worked as the Acquisitions Assistant at the Occidental College Library.

Sarah Lehmann '05 graduated from UCLA's MLIS program in 2008.  She is now Public Services Librarian at American River College in Sacramento, where contributes to reference services, instructions library orientation sessions, and participates in collection development. Prior to attending library school, she was a Mellon intern in 2005 and the Mellon Library Associate at Occidental during the 2005-2006 school year.

Natalie Tagge '03 graduated from the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science program with an MLIS in 2007.  She is currently employed at the Illinois State Library as the State Virtual Reference Coordinator.

Christina Sheldon, MAT '02 is currently an Instruction and Reference Librarian at California State University, Los Angeles. She was previously a LIS graduate intern at the Occidental College Library.  She also holds a BA from Stanford and a MLIS from UCLA.

Doug Thomas '92 is in the process of obtaining an MLS/MLIS at SJSU.  He has worked for 18 years in cataloging and research at a variety of libraries.  His email is: phredless@aol.com.

Emily Woolery '92 earned her MLIS from UCLA in 1996.  She worked as Oxy's Collection Development Facilitator from 1998-2000.  From 2000 to the present she has worked as a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, CA.

Mary Fairbairn '92 is an Instructional Services/Reference Librarian at Furman University's James B. Duke Library.

Timothy Von Dulm '91 - Received his JD from UCLA in 1994, and finally received his MLIS from UCLA in 2004. Tim has worked as a reference librarian at the University of Pennsylvania, Biddle Law Library since October 2004.  Contact Info. tvondulm@law.upenn.edu

Christen Thompson '90 holds a masters degree in LIS, although she is not currently working as a librarian.

Kelley (Kuhn) Weber '84 received her library degree in 1996 from the University of Washington.  She currently works part-time at the Mabee Library at Washburn University in Topeka, KS, and also does professional genealogy research.  You may visit her Web site at www.kawresearch.com

Jane Schless Shelton '82 -  Received an MLS in 1990 from the University of Maryland.  She worked in private law libraries before coming to her senses to join the Reference team at the St. Charles Public Library in St Charles, Illinois.

Irene E. McDermott '81 is a Reference Librarian and Systems Manager at the San Marino Public Library.  Her book, The Librarian's Internet Survival Guide: Strategies for the High-tech Reference Desk is available at the Oxy library reference desk. 

Susan Barb '75 is currently the Cooperative Staff Manager for OCLC's Question Point 24/7 Virtual Reference Cooperative, which provides online virtual reference around the clock for an international cooperative of over 500 libraries.

Dr. Andrea Immel '75 is the Curator of the Cotsen Children's Library at Princeton University.  The library houses an historical, international collection of illustrated children's books, manuscripts, artwork, and educational toys. 

Rae Kozloff '75 has been the Youth Services Librarian at Anacortes Public Library in Anacortes, WA since 1988.

Anthony Anderson '74 is a Arts and Humanities & Social Sciences Librarian at USC. Victoria K. Trotta '73 is the Associate Dean for Information Technology at the Ross-Blakley Law Library of Arizona State University.  She received her MLS from UCLA in '76, and her JD from USC in '86. You may contact her at victoria.trotta@asu.edu.

Carolyn L. Garner-Reagan '71 is the Director of Library and Museum Services at the Arcadia Public Library.  As an Occidental student, she worked at the library in the cataloging department.  She obtained her MLS from UCLA in 1973. You may contact her at cgarner-reagan@ci.arcadia.ca.us 

Walter "Marty" High '71 retired from his position as the Associate Director of the Law School Library at North Carolina Central University in September 2006.  He now owns a used bookstore at the Raleigh/Durham airport with his wife, one of only two used bookstores at US airports.

Lucia (Williams) Snowhill '71 is the Head of Collection Development at UC Santa Barbara.

Marilyn N. Robertson '70 worked most of her career as a Coordinating Field Librarian, one of the District Librarians for the Los Angeles Unified School District.  During 2003-2006, she was Project Manager for 57 new school libraries. She served as President of the California School Library Association in 2000.  She earned her doctorate in education at USC with a dissertation on the impact of The Wonder of Reading, a community nonprofit dedicated to promoting the love of reading by improving school libraries on 15 elementary schools.

Lynda Jones '69 has recently retired from the position of Literacy Coordinator for the Carlsbad City Library in Carlsbad, CA.  She has worked in libraries across the country as well as abroad, and has spent the last several years of her career developing adult literacy programs for Carlsbad residents, both English and Spanish-speaking.  You may contact her at lyndajones@adelphia.net.

Martha Whittaker '68 received her MLIS (1989) and Ph.D (1998) from the School of Library and Information Studies, UC Berkeley.  She is now the Senior Librarian at the Sutro Library, a branch of the California State Library, in San Francisco.

Sarah (Lewis) Roberts '68 is a retired librarian who specialized in Archives Management. She continues to volunteer with her local historical society.  Those interested in archival work may email her at sarahhroberts@msn.com.

Janis Ekdahl '68 retired in 2002 as Chief Librarian of New York's Museum of Modern Art.  Since 2003, she has been working part-time at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts library doing primarily reference and collection development.  Email: jekdahl@nyc.rr.com

Ann Jensen '67 worked for nearly 23 years as a librarian within the University of California system, after receiving her MLS from UC Berkeley in 1983.  Though retired, she is currently serving as the project manager for the Open Content Alliance of the California Digital Library.

Kathy Juline '66 is a retired librarian.  She received her library degree in 1970 from the USC School of Library Science. 

Masako Ohnuki '66 worked in the Huntington Library for two years as a rare book cataloger and returned to Oxy for eighteen years as the Government Publications Specialist at Oxy.

Katherine Russell '65 is a Medical Librarian at the King/Drew Health Sciences Library of Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles. 

Brenda Rueger '64 is a retired librarian.  She specialized in rare books; over the course of her career she has worked at the Huntington Library in San Marino, the Yale Center for British Art, and Stanford University.

Mary Lu Taylor '63 received her MLS degree from Rutgers University in 1964.  She retired in 1999 after nearly 30 years with the Hawaii State Public Library System.  Over the course of her career, she worked as a children's librarians and academic librarian in California, and as a reference and audiovisual librarian, branch manager, and as a state-wide materials selector in Hawaii.  In retirement, she now volunteers at the Hemet, CA Public Library.

Elena M. Panajotovic '62 earned her MLS from UCLA and worked as a reference librarian at Oxy for five years until her first child was born.  Thereafter, she worked part-time at the Beverly Hills Public Library for 30 years, the last five of which she spent as the full-time Head of the Circulation Department.  In 2005, she retired and now works part-time as the adult librarian at the branch by her house.

Louise Richardson '62 is Business Services Librarian at the Fresno County Library. 

Mary L. Stephens '62 plans to retire in December 2006 after 37 years as the Yolo County Librarian.  Over the course of her career she has worked as an academic librarian, a special librarian, and a public librarian.

Arline Bauska LaMear '60  is a librarian at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, OR.

Marilyn Mitchell '61 retired as Director of the University of Puget Sound Library in Tacoma WA. She also worked at the Auraria Library, University of Colorado at Denver and the Oregon State University Library. She received her library degree from the University of Texas in 1966.

Andrew Farkas '59 received his MLS from UC Berkeley in 1962.  He worked at UC Davis from 1962-1967, Walter J. Johnson in New York City from 1967-1970, and was the Director of Libraries (Founding Director) and Professor of Library Science at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida from 1970-2003.  He is now the Library Director Emeritus at UNF.

Joyce Conger Robertson '55 received her M.A. in Library-Media, a program specific for school librarianship, from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  From 1973-1993 she worked as a school librarian in an elementary school in Boulder, with one year (1978-79) on an exchange-library program at Eleele School on Kauai, Hawaii.  In 1986-87 on leave from her Boulder job she spent a year at Simmons College, Boston, in their graduate program in Children's Literature.  She has also published articles on children's literature in several journals, including The Horn Book.

Jane Lesh '54 is a retired librarian.  She received her MLS from the State University of New York system, and once served as President of the Bay Area Independent School Librarians (BAISL).

Marie Picou Veit '51 is a retired librarian.  She has worked at the Coronado Public Library and the Carlsbad Public Library in California, as well as the Salt Lake County Library in Utah.  She received her MSLS from USC in 1970.

Jean R. Miller '50 spent 27 years as the head of the Research Library at Beckman/Coulter.  She also worked for 8 years as Base Librarian for the El Toro Marine Corps and 2 ½ years in England running the library at a U.S. Air Force Base.  She has been retired since 1992.

Dr. Lawrence Clark Powell '28 was the University Librarian at UCLA from 1944 to 1961.  He also directed the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library from 1944 until his retirement in 1966.  UCLA's Powell Library (College Library) is named in his honor.
