Internship Opportunities for MLIS students

We offer several internships for MLIS students. Below is a summary of positions currently available. If you do not see something here that interests you and would like to propose an internship, write to College Librarian Bob Kieft (kieft@oxy.edu).

Collection Development

  • Analyze specific collections and make suggestions for further development and refinement of the print collection.
  • Review current shelves of gift books.
  • Compare our e-resource holdings to our comparison schools.
  • Study interlibrary borrowing.  What generalizations can be made about what we’re borrowing and lending?

If interested, please contact Bob Kieft (kieft@oxy.edu).

 Special Collections

There are nearly 100,000 rare books, archival papers and manuscripts, visual media, paintings, prints and artifacts of unique significance in the arts, literature, theatre, book arts, and local, regional and cultural history in Oxy's
Special Collections. The following are a sample of possible projects:

  • Creating and researching exhibitions.
  • Creating a Finding Aid for one of the 75 collections.
  • Film Preservation: Care and storage of film, video, and audio.
  • Cataloging Ephemera and Books.
  • Digital Archive: Tasks include digitizing historical materials and describing born digital items
  • Grant Writing for more archival description and film preservation.

There are also many more opportunities available. If interested in more information on a potential internship in Special Collections, please contact Dale Stieber, Special Collections Librarian.

Visual Resources

The Visual Resources Center is like a microcosm of a larger fully operational library. Everyday activities include collection development and evaluation, database development and maintenance, website development, cataloging, image scanning and editing, and keeping informed of new technology and trends. We also provide faculty and students support for finding and using images, and offer instruction in visual resources and related technology. Finally we work in collaboration with the main library and information technology staff on campus-wide projects.

In addition to assisting with everyday tasks and learning about various operations of the Visual Resources Center, opportunities for constructing your own projects are available. If interested, please contact
Ryan Brubacher, Visual Resource Center Curator.
