The application fee for Off-Campus Study is $40 and is charged directly to the student's account.  The fee for Off-Campus Study is equivalent to the following on-campus fees: tuition, standard double room, meal plan B, the student body fee, accident insurance and sickness insurance.  The comprehensive off-campus study fee is billed in the usual manner and covers:  the academic program abroad and room and board abroad during the academic program.  The fee excludes travel to/from the academic program, room and board before or after the academic program and during vacation periods.  Students are responsible for paying for their own travel to/from the program in addition to costs associated with such items as photos, passport, immunizations, insurance, meals and housing during vacation periods, books and personal supplies, personal expenses.  Students are responsible for visa fees, when required for program participation, up to $100.  For required visa fees that exceed that amount, students may submit receipts to the IPO and the College will reimburse costs in excess of $100.  Students on various payment plans with the College may request continuation of the service while abroad.  Please see the following link for more information on visas.

Personal Expenses

Just as on-campus, students are responsible for personal expenses while off-campus.  These costs are liable to be higher than during a semester at Oxy.   Personal expenses may include, but are not limited to, such costs as:  books, laundry, internet cafes, postage, telephone calls, gym membership, airport taxes, medical fees, immunizations, purchase of bedding or cooking equipment, refundable housing deposits, passport fees, visa fees, and other incidental expenses.   These expenses are in addition to personal travel and entertainment.  Students are strongly encouraged to review past student evaluations to formulate a realistic budget for their semester off-campus.

Financial Aid

The College continues to provide financial aid in the customary manner to students studying abroad on approved programs.  Students who are awarded workstudy grants should contact Financial Aid prior to study abroad since normally it is not possible to work off-campus during the academic program.  Students on financial aid should communicate with the Office of Financial Aid while off-campus in order to obtain and sign necessary documents associated with aid awards.  Please contact financial aid with questions: finaid@oxy.edu.

Withdrawals

Students who withdraw from off-campus study after submitting their signed Contract will be charged a minimum withdrawal fee of $350 plus all unrecoverable expenses.  Students may not defer their application to a subsequent semester, but they may reapply.

Students on-site who, for medical or personal reasons, decide to leave their program once it has begun should consult with the on-site director as well as the Director of International Programs.  Students who withdraw from a program after it has begun must submit their request for withdrawal and leave in writing.  This may be sent to ipo@oxy.edu. The request will be forwarded to the Office of the Registrar to place the student on-leave from the College for the remainder of the semester.  The written statement should include: the reason for departure from the program, date of withdrawal, plan for the period on leave, and plan for returning to Occidental.  The IPO will work with the off-campus program to determine the implications for grades, credits and finances upon approval of the leave.
