China: Nanjing/Council on International
Educational Exchange (CIEE)


Eligibility: GPA of 2.7; two to six semesters college level
Mandarin Chinese; one Chinese area studies course
recommended.

Dates: Fall: Late August – Mid December
          Spring: Early February – Mid June

Location: Nanjing.

Program Structure: This is an island program focusing on
Mandarin Chinese language and China and Asian studies.
All students enroll in six credits of Readings in Chinese and
six credits of Spoken Chinese at the appropriate level.
Students pledge to speak only Chinese for the duration of
the program. All students on the program take Contemporary
Chinese Studies for three credits. Field trips are integrated
into the courses. The CIEE study center focuses on
developing Mandarin Chinese communication skills and
exploring selected subject areas in contemporary Chinese
society and culture. Students with near native proficiency in
Mandarin should be aware that their language ability may
exceed the most advanced courses offered. The program
takes students on a one-week excursion to Chengdu, Sichuan
Province.

Academic Program:
Spoken Chinese ~ 6 credits
Readings in Chinese ~ 6 credits
Contemporary Chinese Studies ~ 3 credits
Sichuan Module ~ 1 credits
TOTAL OXY CREDITS: 16

Students should work carefully with the academic staff on-site
to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen
credits.  A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for
the semester.

Note that the program in Nanjing implements a CIEE
Community Language Commitment on-site.  The Language
Commitment creates an atmosphere that encourages more
consistent use of the host country language throughout the
program abroad.  It is CIEE's goal that adherence to the
Language Commitment will improve both the academic and
co-curricular aspects of the study abroad experience for the
student.


Housing: Students live on campus with a CIEE and a Chinese
roommate in a triple room.

Number of Students: 15 to 25 students.
