India: Darjeeling-Nepali Studies/Pitzer College
Eligibility: GPA of 2.7. Preparatory area studies course
recommended, such as Religious Studies 160.
Dates: Fall: Early August – Mid-December
Spring: Mid
February – Mid June
Location: The culturally Nepali Darjeeling region between
Nepal and Bhutan. The
region is known for its stunning
Himalayan panoramas and middle-hill
landscapes. Based in
Kalimpong, a charming, old bazaar town that is
largely
unaffected by tourism.
Program Structure: This is an island program. This is a
Nepali Studies program. When the
U.S. State Department
issued a travel warning for Nepal, the Pitzer
program in
Katmandu was moved to Darjeeling, which is populated
primarily by Nepalese ethnic groups who have migrated
east out of
Nepal and by Tibeto-Burman groups who
migrated south across the
Himalayas. Students take a core
course, Regional Nepali Studies, which combines lectures,
readings, discussions and intensive writing in Fieldbooks
with more
experiential components of dorm stays, family
stays and study trips.
Local professors and specialists from
government and private
organizations act as guest lecturers.
In addition to the core seminar in Nepali Studies, students
take intensive
Nepali language, and all students conduct a
directed independent study
project.
Academic Program:
Regional Nepali Studies ~ 4 credits
Intensive Nepali language ~ 8 credits
Directed Independent Study ~ 4 credits
TOTAL OXY CREDITS 16
Students should work carefully with
the academic staff on-site
to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen
credits. A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for
the semester.
Housing: Students live with host families through out the
semester – one near Kalimpong, the program base - and a
short homestay in a remote hill village.
Number of Students: Pitzer group is 12 – 25 students.
