China:
Beijing-Chinese Area Studies/CET
Eligibility: GPA of 3.0.
Dates: Fall: Late August – Mid-December
Spring: Early
February – Late-May
Location: Beijing. Excursions are an integral part of the
areas studies courses.
Program Structure: Students choose from array of
innovative
area studies courses taught in English by U.S.
and Chinese faculty.
Balancing this curriculum are Chinese
language classes, taught by CET’s faculty in Beijing.
Situated in the western part
of the city, away from foreign
influences, the program offers an
ideal location from which
to study Chinese language, history,
politics and culture.
The program accommodates all students, with
varying
degrees of Chinese background, but offering courses in
Chinese history, politics, philosophy, literature and language.
Three levels of Chinese language are offered: beginning
through high
intermediate; however, CET is able to
accommodate advanced students,
including heritage
learners. All area studies courses are taught in
English. All
students take the core course, 21st Century Beijing.
Academic Program:
Chinese Language ~ 8 credits
21st Century Beijing ~ 4 credits
Area studies ~ 4 credits
TOTAL OXY CREDITS: 16
Note
that CET does not allow students to take courses on
a credit/no credit basis.
Students should work carefully with the academic staff on-site
to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen
credits. A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for
the semester.
Housing: In dormitories of Capital Normal University campus
with Chinese roommates.
Number of Students: approximately 10 students.
