England: York/University of
York
Eligibility: 3.0 GPA. Significant
academic background in
the topic of study, typically three to five courses, prior to
the start of the program abroad.
Dates: Spring only: Early January – Mid June
Location: York, half way between London and Edinburgh.
York is located two hours north of London by train.
Program Structure: This is a direct enrollment program.
Noted for its excellence in teaching in addition to research,
York has long been one of the stellar alternatives to
“Oxbridge” in Britain. Students may combine courses from
several departments. Note that the English educational
system is more accelerated than the U.S. liberal arts system
and English students study in their major exclusively. There-
fore, generally, students take 2nd and 3rd year courses in
their major, and 1st year courses in subjects in which they
have no academic background. Note that background in
your field of study is critical for success.
Academic Program: Students enroll in eighty units over
the spring and summer terms. A full load consists of eighty
credits, for which students will receive sixteen Oxy credits.
Courses may be worth ten, twenty or forty credits. Because
of this, the number of classes students take will vary.
80 York units = 16 Oxy units
Students should work carefully with the
academic staff
on-site to construct an academic program totaling no fewer
than sixteen credits. A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will
be awarded for the semester
Housing: Students live on or near campus in campus
housing in modest single study bedrooms in one of the
seven colleges. Most accommodation is self catering, and
though some of the residential colleges have a dining hall.
Number of Students: Approximately 10,000 students. York
has a combined undergraduate and graduate student body
of approximately 10,000 students, and is among the smallest
universities in Britain.
