Australia: Melbourne

Eligibility: 3.0 GPA

Dates: Fall: Early or mid-July to late-November
Spring: Early or mid-February to late-July.

Location: Melbourne, with a population of approximately
three million people, is the second largest city in Australia.

Program Structure: This is a direct enrollment program
based at the University of Melbourne. The program begins
with The Melbourne Welcome orientation program for all
study abroad and exchange students at the University.
Following this week, students integrate fully into the
university system with Australian students. Sports and
societies are open to visiting students, and participants
on the program are strongly encouraged to participate in
a sport or club to enhance their integration into Australian
student life.

Academic Program: Students are admitted to a single
faculty, but may choose broadly from the curriculum.
In keeping with the tradition of the Australian education
system, students should have taken three to five courses
within a particular department to enroll in third or fourth
year courses in that subject. Students without prior
back-ground in a subject typically may enroll in first year
courses in that area. All students must enroll in one course
focusing on Australian culture in an area such as history,
literature, sociology, anthropology or indigenous studies.
Typically, courses carry four credits each and students
enroll in three elective courses, in addition to the Australian
culture course for a total of four courses. However, credits
for individual courses may vary and students may need to
take more than four courses to enroll in a program of study
totaling at least sixteen credits. A maximum of sixteen
credits will be awarded for the semester.

Students should work carefully with the academic staff on-site
to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen
credits.  A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for
the semester.

Housing: University of Melbourne offers two types of
housing. Students may apply to live in one of the
residential colleges on-campus which function similarly
to residence halls at Occidental. Most residential colleges
are catered and students take their meals in a dining hall.
Admission to one of the residential colleges is competitive
as some of the colleges reserve a small number of places
specifically for international students. Students interested
in this option should note than an early housing application,
prior to the regular Occidental off-campus study application
deadline, may be required. The second housing option at
University of Melbourne is apartment-style accommodation
mainly for international students. Typically, the apartment-
style accommodation consists of single or double rooms with
a shared kitchen. In this option, students prepare their own
meals and Occidental provides a meal stipend.

Number of Students: University of Melbourne has
approximately 40,000 students. Approximately 20% are
international students, including study abroad students.
