Japan: Kyoto/Associated Kyoto Program


Eligibility: 3.0 GPA. Two years college-level Japanese. An
in-person interview with a member of the Associated Kyoto
Program consortium faculty. Note that this program has an
early application deadline prior to the Occidental deadline.
Please consult with the IPO regarding application submission
procedures.

Dates: Full-year only; late-August to early-May

Location: Kyoto. The Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) is
based at Doshisha University.

Program Structure: This is an island program. Students
take courses taught by visiting American professors from
AKP member institutions. The consortium members include:
Amherst College, Bates College, Bucknell College, Carleton
College, Colby College, Connecticut College, Middlebury
College, Mount Holyoke College, Oberlin College, Pomona
College, Smith College, Wellesley College, Wesleyan University,
Whitman College and Williams College.

Academic Program:  All students enroll in intensive
Japanese language for 8.0 Occidental credits which meets
five days per week for ninety minutes each day. In addition,
students enroll in two elective courses taught in English, 4.0
Occidental credits each. The electives for 2005-06 include:
AKP-Doshisha Joint Seminar, an AKP class in which Doshisha
students participate, as well; The Game of Go; Japanese
Cinema; Premodern Japanese History; Landscape and
Literature; Modern Japanese History Though Sight and Sound;
Japanese Linguistics. Electives change each year, based upon
the interests of the U.S. faculty in residence.

Students may not take courses on a Credit/No credit basis.

Students should work carefully with the academic staff on-site
to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen
credits.  A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for
the semester.


Housing: Host families in and around Kyoto. Like Japanese
students, students on AKP may expect to commute ninety
minutes each way to and from their host families to the
university each day. Meals are provided by the host family.

Number of Students: Two Occidental students;
approximately forty program participants.
