Chinese University of Hong Kong


Eligibility: GPA of 3.0. Prior coursework in Asian area studies
recommended.

Dates:
Year: Late August – Late December
          Spring: Early January – Late May

Location:
Hong Kong. Half a million of Hong Kong’s seven
million residents are from foreign countries, creating a unique
multicultural lifestyle. At its heart, Hong Kong is Chinese,
while it’s history as a former British colony has left a legacy
of western ways.

Program Structure: Students enroll in the International Asian
Studies Program (IASP). The IASP academic program includes
Asian studies and Chinese (Cantonese) language courses;
most students take a combination of these plus regular
university courses taught in English. Courses available in the
Faculties of Arts, Science and Social Science. Chinese faculty
utilize traditional lecture teaching methods. Great reliance on
independent study in the form of directed reading and essay
writing required. One Cantonese or Putonghua (Mandarin)
language course is required.

Students should work carefully with the academic staff on-site
to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen
credits.  A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for
the semester.


Housing:
Students share a double or triple occupancy room
with local students who have expressed special interest in
sharing a room with a foreign roommate. Students prepare
meals in shared kitchens in their dormitory. A meal allowance
is provided by Occidental.

Number of Students:
16,263 undergraduate and graduate.
Approximately 2 – 4 Oxy students participate in this exchange
program.
