Belize:
Belize City-Natural and Cult. Ecology/
School for International Training (SIT)
Eligibility:
GPA of 2.7.
Dates: Fall: 1st week in September to Mid-December
Spring: Mid-February to Late-May
Location: Belize City. Excursions to the Cockscomb Basin,
Five Blues Lake, Che Chem Ha caves, baboon sanctuary,
archeological sites: Guatemala and Tikal National Park.
Program Structure: This is an island program. Courses
taught for program participants only by host-country
professors and specialist. The program includes a significant
independent
study project.
Academic Program:
Natural and Cultural Ecology Seminar ~ 6 credits
Environmental Field Study Seminar ~ 4 credits
Independent Study Project ~ 6 credits
TOTAL OXY CREDITS: 16
Note that SIT does not allow students to take courses on
a credit/no credit basis.
*Independent Study Projects (ISP) allows students to
pursue a wide range of topics and examples of past
projects are available in the IPO. Students must submit
a copy of their ISP to the IPO no later than four weeks
following the completion of the semester abroad. Tran-
scripts will not be processed until the ISP is received.
Students should work carefully with the academic staff on-site
to construct an academic program totaling no fewer than sixteen
credits. A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will be awarded for
the semester.
Housing: Students live in a homestay for one week in
Belize City, four days in Mayan rural village and two weeks
in San Ignacio. Other accommodations during the program
include tent camping and guest houses.
Number of Students: Up to four Occidental Students.
Whole group approximately 15.
