Botswana:
Gabarone/Pitzer College
Eligibility: GPA of 2.7. Coursework in Southern Africa Area
Studies or Development Studies is recommended.
Dates: Fall: Mid-August to Mid-December.
Spring:
Mid-January to Late May/Early June
Location: Gabarone, the capital located in the southern
portion
of the country. The program offers excursions as
well as short
homestays in small-town and rural areas.
Program Structure: This is an island program. Students
take
courses taught by
host-country professors and
specialists for
the program participants only. Includes a
significant independent study project. the Botswana
Studies core seminar is
multidisciplinary and may be
especially well-suited to students of
history,
sociology,
anthropology, politics, and DWA.
Academic Program:
Botswana Studies ~ 4 credits
Intensive Setswana Studies ~ 8 credits
Directed Independent Study ~ 4 credits
TOTAL OXY CREDITS 16
Students should work carefully with the academic staff
on-site to construct an academic program totaling no fewer
than sixteen credits. A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will
be awarded for the semester
*Direct Independent
Study Projects (DISP) allows students
to
pursue a wide range of topics and examples of past
projects are available in the IPO. Students must submit
a copy of their DISP to the IPO no later than four weeks
following the completion of the semester abroad. Tran-
scripts will not be processed until the DISP is received.
Housing: Host families in Gabarone and during rural and
small-town visits.
