South
Africa: Durban-Reconciliation and
Development/School for International
Training (SIT)
Eligibility: GPA of 2.7
Dates: Fall: 1st week September – Mid-December
Spring: 1st week February – Mid-May
Location: Durban. Excursions to Cape Town, Johannesburg,
Pretoria and rural areas in Kwazulu Natal.
Program Structure: This is an island program. Courses
are taught for program participants only by host-country
professors and specialists. The program includes a significant
independent study project.
Academic Program:
Intensive Zulu ~ 2 credits
Reconciliation and Development Seminar ~ 8 credits
Field Study Seminar ~ 2 credits
Independent Study Project ~ 4 credits
TOTAL OXY CREDITS 16
Note that SIT does not allow students to take course on
a credit/no credit basis.
Students should work carefully with the
academic staff
on-site to construct an academic program totaling no fewer
than sixteen credits. A maximum of sixteen Oxy credits will
be awarded for the semester
*Independent Study Projects (ISP) allows students to
pursue a wide range of topics and examples of past
projects are available in the IPO. Students must submit
a copy of their ISP to the IPO no later than four weeks
following the completion of the semester abroad. Tran-
scripts will not be processed until the ISP is received.
Housing: Students stay in Homestays for six weeks in
Durban and during two-week rural visit. During excursions
students stay at hostels, private homes or small hotels.
Number of Students: Up to four Occidental Students.
Whole group approximately 25.
