ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ANNUAL GIVING

This position will provide support for the Director of Annual Giving in planning and executing the College's fundraising program directed at parents, friends and selected alumni.  Recruits, trains, and supports volunteers for a variety of affinity groups, including Parents Association Council, friends of the College, and a variety of special interest groups.  Identifies, cultivates, and personally solicits individual prospects (approximately 150) for annual and capital gifts from (but not limited to) parents, friends, and alumni.  Produces regular internal and external narrative reports on fundraising activity and donor cultivation progress.  A Bachelor's degree with experience in administrative fundraising in a multi-task environment, as well as proven communication, leadership, and negotiation skills is required.  Individual must possess exceptional professional writing, editing, and analytical ability; strong verbal and interpersonal skills; and an ability to interface professionally with alumni, parents, administration, faculty, and students.  Must be able to work effectively with donor community, with the academic community, and with colleagues in a cooperative environment.  Excellent goal-oriented management skills and the ability to work professionally with volunteers is required.  Additional requirements include superior organizational skills, the ability to work independently with minimal direction, and an ability to work well with others.  Must be detail-oriented and possess a proficiency in use of database and word processing systems.  Must be willing to work flexible hours.  Some travel, nights and weekends required. 

 

 

ASSISTANT INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN

Reporting to the Librarian for the First Year Experience, the Assistant Instruction Librarian will help develop and deliver the Library’s resource and research guidance services for the first-year cultural Studies Program (CSP), as well as other programs for first-year students in collaboration with the Center for Digital Learning and Research (CDLR), faculty, and relevant campus offices.  Will help the Library, CDLR, and academic departments to deliver a coordinated, progressive, and cohesive program of research instruction for students at all levels through in-person sessions and online materials and services.  Participates in providing individual research consultation and other instructional services to the campus community and in training staff who perform instruction and outreach.  ALA-accredited master’s of library science degree or its equivalent in academic training and work experience is required; academic training in visual/media studies or history as evidenced by a bachelor’s or advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.  Must have experience with reference services and library instruction in an academic library.  Proficiency in the development and use of information technologies is required.  Experience with developing online materials and guidance as well as knowledge of trends in online resource-access methods/interfaces is required.  This is an entry-level, one-year position for a librarian wanting to deepen the role of an established program.

CURATORIAL ASSOCIATE                              #09-135

Occidental College invites applications for the position of Curatorial Associate for its world-renown research natural history collection.  The Curatorial Associate provides support for the bird and mammal collections as well as the specimen-based programs for research and education in the MLZ.  The position reports to the Director and Curator of Birds and Mammals.  Duties include the following essential functions:  ensures proper organization, care and preservation of specimens; manages MLZ’s molecular systematics lab; responds to inquiries and handles loans of specimens; prepares drafts of annual summaries; assists in maintaining MLZ website and specimen database; supervises student workers.  Opportunities exist for collaborative research on the molecular systematics and phylogeography of birds and mammals.  Bachelor’s degree in biology required (advanced degree preferred).  Experience working in research natural history collections, and familiarity with avian and mammalian taxonomy and molecular systematics is strongly preferred.  Must possess excellent communications skills and demonstrate strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.  A heightened level of understanding of advances in information technology related to research collections is desirable.  This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment.  The position is funded in part by an external grant and will continue on a year-to-year basis at the discretion of the Director and as long as funds remain available. 

 

 

DIRECTOR OF PRE-HEALTH ADVISING        #09-134

Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Director of Pre-Health Advising will mentor students as they apply to professional schools in the health sciences.  Serves as a member of the Health Professional Advisory Committee, meets with prospective students and parents during Admission events, hosts pre-health student workshops, and coordinates and assists in the pre-health application process.  Graduate degree required (Ph.D. preferred) and significant knowledge and familiarity with health professions schools’ admissions procedures.  Requires initiative in organizing programs and planning events.  Must possess exceptional communication ability and excellent writing and editing skills.  Experience in working in a college or university setting is required, as is a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity in the health professions.

 

 

HEAD COACH~WOMEN'S LACROSSE            #09-260

This is a full time 10-month administrative and professional staff position, reporting to the Director of Athletics.  Occidental College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college and a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as well as NCAA Division III.  The Head Coach will be responsible for all aspects of coaching, recruiting and administering the women's lacrosse program.  This position also entails secondary athletic administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics.  The program will be conducted in compliance with policies of the College, the SCIAC and the NCAA.  A Bachelor's degree is required (or equivalent combination of education and experience), with a Master's degree preferred.  Must have a minimum of 5 years coaching experience, preferably at the College level.  Priority consideration date is 7/1/09, however, applicants will be accepted until the position is filled.

Occidental College is seeking an experienced Instructional Technologist who will assist the College in realizing its digital scholarship vision by planning for and providing 21st century academic technology support.  Reporting to the Director of the Center for Digital Learning and Research, the ideal candidate will implement programs and services for faculty and students that stimulate the creative and innovative use of assorted technologies (multimedia, web 2.0, e-publishing, LMS, etc.) across the full spectrum of instruction, learning, content creation, research and co-curricular student life.  If you are a dynamic change-agent with a demonstrated passion and aptitude for using technology as well as exploiting its potential to reshape scholarship, please apply.  A Master's degree, preferably in Instructional Technology or Design, is required.  Candidates must also possess knowledge of learning theory, pedagogical practices, learning resources and instructional technology tools and practices; demonstrated experience integrating technology in higher education with teaching, learning, or research environments; and at least three years of progressively responsible experience with learning technologies and management of staff or students and technology resources.

PROJECT COORDINATOR, FARM TO INSTITUTION PROGRAM                                     #09-259

UEPI is seeking a candidate to advance the work of UEPI and the Center for Food & Justice's farm to institution programs.  The Project Coordinator's primary responsibilities include the development and implementation of two key farm to institution initiatives:  the San Diego Growers' Project, and the Farm Direct Project, which includes in-school and on-farm education and programming.  Will also support the Project Director in implementing three other local food distribution and access initiatives:  the Local School Food Line, the Farmers' Market Hub network, and a Farm to WIC-related project.  Additionally, will collaborate on other UEPI projects, including farm to school and farm to institution, that further the social justice mission of UEPI.  A Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in community food systems, farming and/or farmers' markets, food distribution systems, institutional purchasing or food service is required, advanced degree preferred.  Candidates must have demonstrated program experience and excellent written and oral communication skills.  Must have own transportation, and be willing/able to work some evenings and weekends, and travel to conferences around the state and country as needed.  Familiarity with grant writing and bilingual in Spanish or other language a plus.  Deadline for applications is July 10, 2009.  For a more detailed description of the Project Coordinator responsibilities and requirements, log on to:
