JOB SUMMARY

 

 Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students,

 the  Assistant Dean of Students directs education and services related to 

 community rights and responsibilities and support for students of concern

 and those with learning differences.  The Assistant Dean supervises the

 directors of the Career Development Center, Emmons Health Center,

 Disabled Student Services and the Assistant Director of Student Services. 

 This position is responsible for the planning and coordination of Division-

 wide assessment activities.  In the absence of the Dean of Students, this

 position will share duties with the other Assistant Deans in being the  

 administrator in charge for the Division of Student Affairs.

 

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

 Staff Supervision:

 

  • Supervises and evaluates performance of directors of Career Development Center, Emmons Health Center, Disabled Student Services and Assistant Director of Student Services.

 

  • Provides leadership for all issues related to responding to students of concern and program assessment activities for regional accreditation and program review.

 

 Develop Strategies to Assist Students with Special Needs:

 

  • Develop programs with assistant deans/department heads that have specific responsibilities for retention leadership in their respective areas.  Provide managerial leadership to them to ensure that a cohesive team effort is applied to retention support services operations.

 

  • Assess students’ needs for delivery of retention support services and/or external agency referral.

 

  • Assess college retention and graduation/completion rates to address programmatic needs.

 

  • Analyze retention trends for implementation of student intervention strategies.

 

  • Coordinate entry needs for students with disabilities with CAE, Emmons, REHS, and faculty.

 

  • Remain current on government legislation pertaining to accommodations (ie., special needs such as physical and learning disabilities).

 

  • Work with students to resolve issues and problems not addressed at the department/program level to ensure that they are retained and achieve their academic/personal enrichment goals.

 

  • Serve on College-wide or ad hoc committees as direct to address systematic retention issues.

 

 Students of Concern and Case Management:

 

  • Co-Chair the Student Success Team, directing behavioral intervention efforts to avoid or attenuate the potential for student crisis.  Review and revise crisis response protocols as needed.

 

  • Train SST members and develop measures to ensure effectiveness.

 

  • Address the unique issues facing students who request petitions for special consideration and/or are returning from leave of absences after a health withdrawal.

 

  • Respond promptly to inquiries from faculty and other staff regarding students of concern and extended absences from campus.

 

  • Maintain and improve record keeping system and follow up on crisis incidents, including hospitalization follow-ups.

 

  Develop and Implement Assessment Program:

 

  • Design a statement of purpose, learning outcomes, and assessment mechanism for Student Affairs and coordinate assessment activities for all departments and programs in Student Affairs.

 

  • Manage budgetary requests from department heads in support of annual goals.

 

  • Provide leadership and feedback to department heads in developing, maintaining, and conducting effective assessment activities.

 

  • In conjunction with the director of Institutional Research, conduct a variety of quantitative and qualitative assessment to support campus-wide assessment plans.

 

  • Maintain current knowledge about assessment programs, activities, and mechanisms.

 

  • Prepare a semi-annual report or Student Affairs and present important developments within Division to the campus community.

 

 Coordinate Program and Policy Reviews:

 

  • Lead policy review committees as outlined in College Policies or designated by the Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (i.e., Alcohol Policy, Sexual Assault Policy, etc.).

 

  • Educate and train the campus community about policy changes and updates; offer educational campaigns related to current campus issues (i.e., weapons, sexual assault, alcohol, etc.).

 

 Supervise Student Staff:

 

  • Supervise student staff in the implementation of the duties of this position.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Remain current on legal issues in higher education; including policy formulation, implementation and compliance.

 

  • Ability to manage personnel successfully (supervision, staff development, resolution of personnel issues, etc.).

 

  • Program design, implementation and monitoring experience required.

 

  • Ability to manage an organization within allotted budget.

 

  • Advanced knowledge of assessment and retention principles.

 

  • Formal training or direct experience in the process of mediation.

 

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of personal/professional integrity, respect for privacy and confidentiality, a sense of ethics and a commitment to educating students.

 

 Knowledge, skills and abilities:

 

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal communication, analytical and computer skills.

 

  • Strong time-management skills, ability to prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines.

 

  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals in a fast paced, multi-faceted student-service environment.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED EDUCATION

  • Required:  Master’s degree in college student personnel administration, educational administration, college student affairs or related field. 

  • Preferred:  PhD/EdD

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum:  Five to eight years

  • Preferred:   Nine to twelve years
