Course Requirements for Minor
The State of California prohibits undergraduate
majors in Education. Prospective teachers must first obtain a
solid foundation of knowledge by completing a major in one or
more other academic disciplines. The Minor in Education allows
undergraduate students to prepare early for teaching and other
service-related professions. Completion of the Minor while an
undergraduate facilitates earning a Master of Arts in Teaching
Degree, as
well as completing the courses required for a Level - I teaching credential
during a special, extended Spring Semester through June in the senior year.
Occidental
undergraduate students may begin as
early as the first year to take courses that allow them to develop
skills either for teaching or for personal leadership. Completion of
the minor also
serves as strong preparation for: (1) Earning a preliminary teaching
credential by the end of the your senior year (2) Admitted graduate school
(5th year or MAT Degree options) at
Occidental (or elsewhere); or (3) Finding possible employment as a teacher in
programs that do not require credentials, such as,
internships, or private schools; or obtaining employment in
education-related agencies, organizations, businesses and
institutions.
Undergraduate students who
are thinking about careers in teaching should consult the chair of the Department of Education or obtain information from the
credential analyst as early as possible. Students may declare their intent to
complete a minor in Education at any time after enrolling in one Education course; early consultation
and filing the form with the Registrar will permit careful planning and coordination of the Education program
with the major program.
