EDUCATIONAL LEADERS PROGRAM

Our Mission

The mission of the Education Department is to prepare students to be excellent urban educators.  Study of pedagogy and content enables our students to advocate for equity and social justice as these issues play out in the classroom and the politics of education.  Oxy future teachers are trained to be leaders and to work within a strong community network to grapple with theory and practice through college readings and intensive fieldwork experience.  Social constructionist philosophy frames the dynamic relationship between content, knowledge, and pedagogy emphasized in our program.  Oxy students collaborate professionally with classroom teachers, parents, and students.  They reflect on their teaching practice, and learn to build a community within their own classrooms and beyond.  Future teachers are prepared to work, support, and be leaders in pluralistic school communities that embrace diversity and inclusion.

Program Goals

1.  Students will teach for social justice as they learn about the social and

     political contexts of education.

2.  Students will understand and apply learning theories in diverse classrooms.

3.  Students will learn and practice effective multicultural and inclusive

     pedagogy.

4.  Students will learn the various purposes of assessments, as well as

evaluate, construct, and use them to inform instruction.

5.  Students will learn, critique, and practice standards-based and subject-

     specific pedagogy.

6.  Educational Leaders will learn to differentiate curriculum and instruction to

address their students' linguistic diversity in their classroom.

7.  Students will reflect on their teaching practices, school experiences,

and develop as professionals and educational leaders.
