The Junior Writing Requirement in Economics

Links to information in the College Catalog:
Additional information:
  1. A student may use any 300-level Economics elective or Economics 272 to satisfy the requirement.
  2. The course must be taken no earlier than the Spring semester of the student's sophomore year and no later than the Spring semester of the junior year.
  3. A course instructor will evaluate a student's writing for purposes of fulfilling the JWR only if specifically requested to do so by the student.
  4. Students may request that a past course taken during a qualifying semester be considered for the JWR if they can provide the course instructor with the original copies of their graded writing assignments for the course.
  5. If a student passes the junior writing requirement, the instructor should email that information to the Department Chair and CC the student. The Department Chair passes that information on to the English Writing Program Office when requested to do so (typically near the end of each academic year).
  6. There can be a considerable time lag until the completion of the requirement shows up on student transcripts, but the email that students receive is sufficient evidence that they have met the requirement. It is therefore advisable for students to retain the email that they receive.
  7. Students who fail to satisfy the requirement by the end of their junior year must, during their senior year: (1) take and pass an appropriate English Writing course at Occidental College, and (2) be deemed as having written satisfactorily in either Economics 490 or 495.
  8. Double majors may satisfy the requirement under whichever major they choose.
