PricewaterhouseCoopers is a multi-national professional services firm that provides assurance, corporate finance, and tax services to large international corporations.
I obtained the position in April of my senior year. I started in September 2004. I’ve held the position for 14 months. My position entails performing assurance work for a range of clients. My main responsibility is performing external audit work. In assurance and audit work, the main services provided include providing advice on controls and processing system weaknesses as well as independent review of externally reported financial and other information.
I especially like the range of clients and not being stuck in the same office more than 3 or 4 weeks at a time. I don’t like the fact that the work has clear reporting dates which results in long hours of work.
I think this position is good for people with interests in learning about accountancy and how large firms operate. One additional benefit is the fact that part of my contract includes training for the Chartered Accountancy. This training exposes me to a variety of topics that are essential to also running a business.
Best ways to prepare for this while you’re still at Oxy include taking a broad range of classes. This is a good way to prepare for client contact as then it is easier to make conversation. As I work in London, all the big firms provide training contracts for graduates. This means all graduates are provided with training over a period of three years and become chartered accountants at the end of their training contracts.
