Special Collections Digital Collections

Welcome to Occidental College's
Online Archive!

How to use the digital archive tools:

The Library has digitized representative documents from three collections housed in its Special Collections Dept. The documents provide a range of media including letters, newspapers, reports, pamphlets, stereographic views, posters and maps. Each virtual collection is introduced through a companion website providing historical context and each document in the archive has been described or analyzed by Occidental undergraduates participating in internships or class projects.  These document descriptions can be accessed with each item, aid in searching and provide additional intellectual content.

We invite you to browse these virtual collections through the selections grouped below. You also have the option to search within a collection or across all collections, create customized queries by keywords or phrases and by preferences such as title, subject, description, or a variety of other fields.

Online Archive of the Japanese American Relocation during World War II:
These historical documents were preserved through the efforts of President Remsen DuBois Bird and College Librarian, Elizabeth McCloy, in the mid-1940’s. An initial grant from the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation’s Archival Grants Program in 2004 partially funds the Library’s digital archive project to preserve, digitize and distribute a selection of the letters, materials and newspapers published in the Japanese internment camps during World War II.
Stereographs
This digital archive presents selected stereographic views from the American Civil War, the Cuban and Philippine campaigns of the Spanish American War of 1898,  the Russo-Japanese War of 1904, and the World War of 1914 to 1918. Sixty stereographic cards were selected from the holdings of the Charles D. Klamm Stereograph Collection to be described and analyzed by the students in the History of Photography (Art History 287) class during the spring of 2008.

Southern California Architecture:  Occidental College Campus

This digital archive contains photographs documenting the construction, use, modification, renovation, and reuse of Occidental Campus buildings and the maturing of the landscaping. A major figure in the history of Southern California architecture, Myron Hunt established the master plan for the Occidental College campus and was responsible for the design of all campus buildings built between 1912 and 1940. The collection is housed in the photograph collection of Occidental College Library's Special Collections.
