Career Development Center

CAREER ADVISING AND COUNSELING SERVICES 

The Occidental College Career Development Center provides career advising and counseling  free of charge on a drop-in basis, group workshops and individual career counseling (by appointment) for students concerned about issues such as:

  • Career decision-making
  • Choosing a major
  • Exploring interests, values and skills
  • Exploring occupations
  • Options for graduate study
  • Job hunting

Mock Interviews are videotaped and critiqued prior to a job or graduate/professional school interview.  They require an appointment.

Resumes and cover letters critiques are done on a walk-in and appointment basis.

Career advising is available for securing internship, full-time and part-time positions.

Reciprocity with another career center can be arranged, whereby a student can enter an agreement to use career services with many colleges and universities across the United States.  

RESOURCES

Career Resources Library has over 350 books that may be checked out overnight, magazines, test bulletins, salary surveys, and "What Can I Do with a Major in" brochures.

Career Guides to Assist in the Job Search
Helpful guides to assist with writing resumes and cover letters, prepare for job interviews, and much more.

Brochures about Majors at Occidental College and the relationship to occupations.

Four computers with Internet access, Microsoft Office applications and practice programs for GRE and LSAT.

PROGRAMS

Exploring Majors at Oxy is an event where faculty, selected students and alumni share what the different majors offer.

Workshops are offered on a wide range of topics, such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, finding employment in the hidden job market, networking, "What Can I Do with a Major In..." and much more.  Request a Workshop.

Internships are off-campus co-curricular experiences.

Recruitment Activities include information sessions with employers, on-campus interviews, and career fairs.

Graduate School Activities include information sessions, graduate fairs, and free graduate school testing by major preparatory companies.

Professional Panels are organized around a specific profession, an industry, a theme and are comprised of alumni, family members of students and community members at large.  

Career Speaker Series is made up of small, intimate roundtable discussions with professionals in specific occupations.

Values, Ethics, Meaningful Work Roundtables are held with professionals to dialogue on issues related to vocational choice.

Walk In My Shoes is a career shadowing program where students spend time with a professional in an area of interest.

Social Business Dinner is an annual event covering proper business etiquette.

Alumni Sharing Knowledge Network is an online database of alumni willing to help students. 

Interview with a Tiger is an event where alumni and employers conduct mock interviews.
