The Career Development Center does not match
tutors with families.
Please be advised that
Occidental College is a residential campus. Students are not on campus during
the summer; therefore, it can be more challenging to fill your tutoring needs
at this time.
As a service to you, we have provided information below about our Community
Literacy Center which is part of the Department of Education on campus.
Community Literacy Center
The
Occidental College Community Literacy Center provides children in grades K-6
with instruction in reading and writing. The philosophy of the Literacy
Center is developmental, with each child progressing at his or her individual
pace. Instruction is individualized and targeted to meet each child’s
particular needs.
The Center has provided services to the
community since 1963, when it was first established. Its reputation and
successes with students have been widely recognized by parents, local teachers
and administrators. As a result, openings in the program fill quickly. Contact
with the center or early submission of applications is highly recommended.
Children who
enroll at Occidental’s Community Literacy Center are matched with a college
tutor. Children also use computers and digital technology to enrich reading
and writing activities. The literacy program includes a wide range of
experiences in reading and writing.
The Literacy Center is open
from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the Fall 2002 and
Spring 2003 semesters. Classes run from 4:00 to 5:30 and each child attends
twice a week. Cost to community $200.00 per semester.
If you would like an application or if you
need additional information, please contact literacy@oxy.edu.
Babysitting
If
you have a babysitting need, we recommend that you contact Pasadena City
College or Glendale Community College. Occidental
College does not offer a Child Development major and few students seek these
type of part-time positions. We appreciate that you have a very important need, and advise you to
contact our neighboring colleges to access a larger candidate pool.
Other
Needs
If
you have an odd job, or a short-term or one-time need, such as yard work,
academic research, etc., please contact us at
(323) 259-2623. The Career Development Center will evaluate your need and
determine if the position is appropriate for our student population. The
Career Development Center does not list openings for community members who
seek companionship.
