The Career Development Center offers many ways for Occidental alumni to get involved.  All of these options and the level of contact are negotiable.

Here are some suggestions for involvement:

  • Conduct an informational interview with students.  This valuable career exploration tool allows students to learn about career fields of interest to them, the organization they may wish to join, and the level of education and experience required to enter a field.  We tell students and alumni that these are not job interviews, although often times the connection can lead to future employment opportunities.

  • Provide advice about graduate school issues and choices.

  • BEHIND THE SCENES is program coordinated by the Student Alumni Relations Committee (SARC), which brings students into the workplaces of alumni.  Offer to have students come to your organization for a day.  Please contact Heather Henderson, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, or call (323) 344-4175 if you are interested.

  • Allow a student to shadow you at your workplace for part of a day or longer, so s/he can learn the realities of a career choice.  We have an organized program called Walk In My Shoes, which will be conducted in fall this year. However, we encourage students to shadow all year long.

  • Conduct a workshop on current trends in your professional field.

  • Participate in an industry panel with other professionals or the “Career Speaker Series” where, as an expert in your field, you meet informally with a small group of students.

  • Serve as a table host at the annual “Social Business Dinner” held in February.

  • Recruit Oxy students into your organization.  After all, what makes a better recruiter than someone who knows both your company and his/her alma mater?  Also, let us know if you or your colleagues can sponsor internships. Please see our Alumni Employer section or contact us directly.  We welcome your participation.
