ELECTRONIC RESOURCES FOR BIO 130
The fifth edition of Biology by Campbell, Reece, and Mitchell has some excellent electronic resources, in the form of a CD-ROM and a website. THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE INTERNET EXPLORER, NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR (if you prefer to use that as your browser, but you will need Internet Explorer to access the Discussion Forum), AND THE NECESSARY PLUG-INS. In order to maximally utilize these resources you need to make sure that the computer you are using has either Netscape Communicator (version 4.07 or later) or Internet Explorer (version 4.01 or later). You will also need a variety of plug-ins. These browsers and plug-ins can all be downloaded free of charge. The simplest way to do this is to go to The Biology Place, log in, and click on the Internet Toolkit (found at the lower right hand corner of the screen).
From the Internet Toolkit, you can upgrade your browser to Netscape Communicator version 4.6, or Internet Explorer version 5.0. You will need Internet Explorer to access the class Discussion Forum. If you prefer to use Netscape Communicator for your browser, you can use it for all other aspects of this class.
The plug-ins that you will need are all listed on the site. They are: QuickTime, Shockwave and Shockwave Flash, RealPlayer, Chemscape Chime, and (only if you have a Mac) RED/GD.
Once you have these browser(s) and plug-ins installed, you are ready to use both the CD-ROM and the website.
Initial Steps:
CD-ROM: This link will take you to detailed instructions of how to use the CD-ROM, in particular, how to use the CD-ROM without accidently installing an old version of the browser over your newer version!
The website accompanying the book, The Biology Place, is straightforward to use once you have the plug-ins installed. Be sure to check out the BioCoach activities, the BioQuest activities, and all the other related activities. We hope to get a lot of feedback from you about this website. As you are the first class here at Oxy, and in fact in the world, to use this website, your comments will be particularly helpful.
