USE OF THE CD-ROM FOR
CAMPBELL'S BIOLOGY
The CD-ROM can be a little tricky to use,
so follow the directions below. The most useful parts of the CD-ROM, from my
perspective, are the Activities and the Quizzes. Let me know if you find the
glossary helpful. I do not recommend using the Web Links, as the Campbell Biology
Place website is more up to date.
When you first put the CD-ROM into your
computer, you will find that if you simply click on the CD-ROM icon, it will try to
install old versions of Netscape Communicator (version 4.07)
or Internet Explorer (version 4.01). IT WILL INSTALL THESE RIGHT OVER YOUR
MORE CURRENT VERSION OF THESE BROWSERS, SO DON'T DO IT!!! Instead, start up
your browser (either one), then follow the instructions below.
Netscape Communicator
- Click on "File" and from the pull down menu choose
"Open"
- When the "Open Page" dialog box comes up, click
the "Choose File..." button
- Keep clicking the "Go Up One Level" button (the
file folder with an up arrow to the right of the URL box) until you get to "My
Computer"
- Double click on the icon for your CD-ROM drive (containing,
of course, the Campbell CD-ROM)
- Double click on the file called "index.htm"
- When the "Open Page" dialog box comes up, now
showing the URL for the index.htm file on the CD-ROM, click the "Open" button
- This will open the CD-ROM to the introductory page; read the
text, click "Agree" and off you go...
Internet Explorer
- Click on "File" and from the pull down menu choose
"Open Page"
- When the "Open" dialog box comes up, click the
"Browse..." button
- Keep clicking the "Go Up One Level" button (the
file folder with an up arrow to the right of the URL box) until you get to "My
Computer"
- Double click on the icon for your CD-ROM drive (containing,
of course, the Campbell CD-ROM)
- Double click on the file called "index.htm"
- When the "Open" dialog box comes up, now showing
the URL for the index.htm file on the CD-ROM, click the "OK" button

text, click "Agree" and off you go...
