Senior Thesis: "The Evolution of Separation: the Experiences of Forgotten Amerasian Children in Japan, Korea and Vietnam" Took part in the Waseda program in Tokyo, Japan Senior thesis: "Primary Education in Rural China and India: A Focus on Female Participation Within Each School System" Fall, 2001, studied in Nanjing, China My senior thesis is on filial piety, a traditional value that is still a highly regarded in modern East Asian countries. However, the manifestations and expressions of filial behavior have altered from the past. I am interested in how this value has changed and what the causes of those changes are. In my thesis, I argue that cultural and pragmatic factors behind familial responses to political and economic forces are responsible for the transformations of filial piety that are visible today. Reflecting on my four years, I am really glad I came to Oxy because of the opportunities it opened up for me. First of all, I had originally planned to be Chemistry major but being at Oxy, I was able to take a wide range of other courses and found that my interest in Asian Studies outweighed that in Chemistry. As a consequence of the flexibility in the curriculum, I was able to major in Asian Studies though I didnt decide until the end of my sophomore year. At the same time, I was still able to minor in Chemistry. Second, Oxy offers the Richter Scholarship, a summer scholarship that allows a number of Occidental students to study a topic of their own interest overseas. I applied the spring of my junior year and was able to study filial piety in Hong Kong. The opportunity gave me valuable skills in field research and I had a blast. Third, I was able to study abroad the Fall semester of my senior year at Beijing University, China where I studied not only the Chinese language but also culture, society, and media studies. The entire experience of being abroad was a wonderful. Overall, I benefited tremendously from the Oxy experience, which I believe I could not have gotten elsewhere. Class of 2001
