The mission of the Department of Art History and Visual Arts is to educate students in the richness and complexity of the visual arts. Visual literacy is essential for informed participation and innovation within local and global cultures. Combining the disciplines of film / media theory and production, studio art, and art history, AHVA equips students to critically explore the interplay of culture, history, theory, analysis, and practice.

 

Unveiling Reception for 'Pentimento Montage'

Professor Linda Lyke was commissioned to create a permanent mosaic in in honor of the inauguration of Jonathan Veitch.  The mosaic celebrates Oxy's past & present history.

 

WEINGART GALLERY OPEN CALL FOR ART EXHIBITION


The Weingart Art Gallery is having an open call to oxy students to propose an exhibit of artwork during the Spring semester within the two galleries.   Two student initiated art shows will be available from March 4, - March 31, 2010.  Students may apply for a solo show, or collaborate with peers for two or three person shows.  We will also be accepting proposals from students to curate a group show, which may include student/or nonstudent work.  All medium welcome.
Submission Process:
To apply please submit a CD with 10 images that represents the proposed work to be to be exhibited, or past work.  If multiple students are applying for one show, please send work examples for each artist together on one CD.  The images should be jpeg files no larger than 200 dpi, (medium sized images).   Also include a short written proposal with the name(s) of the artist(s), proposed exhibition title, and brief description of the theme or concept of the show.  Students interested in curating a show should submit a one-page exhibition proposal outlining the theme of a proposed group show and the type of work to be exhibited.
Submission Deadline:  December 10, 2009
